Overview

Childhood is a contemplative abstract work rendered in a restrained monochromatic palette. It explores the tension between innocence and social conformity. The composition is divided into two contrasting zones, visually and conceptually representing the progression from uninhibited childhood to conditioned adulthood.

The top two-thirds—dominated by whites and greys—features subdued textures, erratic scratches, and a solitary box in the upper left corner. This section symbolizes the gradual imposition of societal expectations as we grow older. The box, stark and contained, is a metaphor for the psychological boundaries and behavioural norms we are expected to inhabit. Surrounding it is a field of marks that suggest scrutiny—representing the presence of external judgment and the pressure to conform.

In contrast, the lower third is a field of matte black, evoking the surface of a chalkboard. Spontaneous, childlike scratches and erratic forms appear within this space—echoes of unfiltered creativity, emotional honesty, and the freedom of early life. This section resists the order imposed above, symbolizing a time when imagination was unbound, and expression was instinctual rather than regulated.

Childhood reflects on the loss of innocence and the quiet resignation that often accompanies maturity. Yet within its dual structure lies an implicit question: Can we reclaim the authenticity of our inner child despite the constraints of adulthood? The work invites witnesses to reflect on their transitions, their accepted boundaries, and the spaces where innocence may still reside beneath the surface.
